Saint Death inside a Mexican prison
I met Enriqueta Vargas while shooting a documentary about the Saint Death in the US. She invited me one day to come with her to a few of the many masses she conducts during the Day of the Dead celebrations in Mexico. As the leader of the Saint Death cult in Mexico, Enriqueta is revered as a very important figure but above anything, as a mother to many people living in the margins of society, including those in prison. I was touched by how the inmates see in her a pathway to redemption, an image of hope - and how a feminine religious figure can become so important in a social context that can be extremelly rough. She showed me devotion can also be a form of resistance and sometimes that is the only thing some people have.
